MGA presented the Perspective of Malaysian Gas Market at IFGE2018

14 Feb 2018

On 13 February 2018, MGA’s Secretary General, Rosman Hamzah, presented the “Perspective of Malaysian Gas Market” at the International Forum On Global Energy Landscape: Electricity & Gas Market Liberalisation And Its Implication To Malaysian Economy (IFGE 2018) held at Marriott, Putrajaya.

The Forum was organised by Institute of Energy Policy and Research (IEPRe), an Institute under Universiti Tenaga Nasional (UNITEN). The forum was held in collaboration with Suruhanjaya Tenaga (ST) and Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB).

In his presentation, Rosman emphasised the following;
· Natural Gas is abundant and will remain an important energy for the future; forecasted to be the largest single source of energy by 2050.
· Natural Gas has been and still is the backbone Malaysia’s economic development (providing >40% of energy needs annually since 1990s) and will remain playing a significant role going forward towards 2050.
· With cross border pipeline connections and regasification terminals, natural gas supply is no longer an issue.
· Third party access will create healthy competition, provide more options to customers and at competitive pricing.

Later in the afternoon, Rosman joined the following speakers in a panel session to answer questions from the audience;
· Patrick Heather, Senior Research Fellow, Oxford Institute for Energy Studies (OIES).
· Dr. Yanfei Li , Energy Economist, Economic Research Institute for ASEAN and East Asia (ERIA).

The panel session was moderated by Prof Ken Koyama, Chair in Energy Economics of Energy Commission at IEPRe, UNITEN and Managing Director of Institute of Energy Economics, Japan (IEEJ).
