MGA presented the Role of Natural Gas in Expediting Growth of Renewable

On 24 April 2018, MGA’s Secretary General, Rosman Hamzah, presented the “Role of Natural Gas in Expediting Growth of Renewables” at 2018 Asian Power Utility Forum held at Shangri-La, Kuala Lumpur.

The forum, organised by Asian Power Magazine, is a series of forums held in Manila, Jakarta and Singapore. The session in Kuala Lumpur was attended by more than 60 professionals from the Malaysian energy sector.

In his presentation, Rosman emphasised the following;
1. Natural Gas is abundant and will remain an important energy for the future; forecasted to be the largest single source of energy by 2050.
2. Gas market reforms enables security of supply for Malaysia
3. Gas is the perfect partner to expedite the growth of renewables due to the following;
a) It is the cleanest fossil fuel
b) It is very accessible and in abundance
c) A gas turbine plant is very reliable and flexible; perfect to support the intermittency of renewables

Rosman ended his presentation with a quote from the Marco Alverà, the Chief Executive Officer of Snam S.p.A. During the CERAWeek’s Panel Session on “Gas & Renewables: Competitors or partners?” held on 7th March 2018, when asked if gas is in competition with renewables or are they actually partners, Mr. Alverà said, “Gas & Renewables are indeed partners. They are perhaps dating, and may soon get married.”
