UTM’s Energy Security Summit Identified Gas as a Future Energy
13 Dec 2017
MGA on 9 December 2017 collaborated with the Gas Engineering Students Society of Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) to organise the panel session at UTM’s Regional Summit On Energy Security for Next Generation – Reality and Challenges 2017 at UTM, Skudai.
The Panel session was on “Energy Security for Malaysia” and the following were the speakers;
Ir Mohd Zamri bin Laton, Deputy Director, Sustainable Energy Development Authority Malaysia
“Feed-In Tariff (FiT)”
Rosman Hamzah, Secretary General, Malaysian Gas Association
“Future Power for Malaysia”
Rosli Khairon, Manager Technical & Projects, Malaysian Gas Association
“Gas In Malaysia’s Sustainable Energy Future”
One of the key takeaways from the forum includes the importance of natural gas to Malaysia’s future energy security. The IEA defines energy security as “the uninterrupted availability of energy sources at an affordable price”. Gas is the best fossil fuel to ensure energy security for the power sector in Malaysia because;
1. Gas is abundant and supply to Peninsular Malaysia is uninterrupted with offshore piped gas and redundant regasification terminals.
2. Competition in third party access environment will ensure affordable prices
3. Gas is the cleanest, most efficient and most flexible partner to renewable energy
Earlier, the speakers joined Prof. Dr. Mohd. Ghazali Mohd. Nawawi, Dean of Faculty of Chemical & Energy Engineering, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia to officiate the opening of the Regional Summit. Besides the panel session on Energy Security, the summit also held competitions on Energy-Minds Challenge – 1st Year Category, EnergyClick Photo Contest & Energy Plant Competition.
