MGA Launches Sabah Region Working Committee to Promote the Advancement of a Sustainable Gas Industry
Sabah, 7 June 2023 – Malaysian Gas Association (MGA) on 7 April 2023 officially launched its Sabah Region Working Committee at a networking reception in Kota Kinabalu, Malaysia. Attended by existing and prospective members alike, the event marks the importance of concerted efforts by the gas industry in Sabah in enhancing the already vital role that natural gas plays in providing reliable and clean energy for the state, thus making Sabah an attractive investment destination.
This recent year has seen several key developments in the gas industry in Sabah. This includes the launch of the Sabah Gas Masterplan in 2022 which is designed to attract investments into the state by capitalising on its indigenous natural gas resources. The Masterplan also identified a more prominent role in gas marketing and distribution for the State Government where natural gas will be made available for the development of key industries in the state.
“The formation of MGA’s Sabah Region Working Committee is timely as the state becomes more independent in regulating its gas supply with the establishment of the Energy Commission of Sabah. Together with the Sabah Gas Masterplan, all the jigsaw pieces seem to fall nicely into place. Sabah Energy Corporation is excited to lead the newly-formed Working Committee. With strong support from policymakers, regulators and industry players, we are confident that the gas industry in Sabah will enhance its role in ensuring energy security, energy access and drive socio-economic development.” said Adzmir Abdul Rahman, Chief Executive Officer of Sabah Energy Corporation at the launching event.
“As the lead advocate for the Malaysian gas industry, it is our duty to represent our members throughout Malaysia to develop a vibrant and sustainable gas industry. MGA has the collective expertise and experience from more than 130 members from across the natural gas value chain that can support any gas-related initiatives throughout Malaysia, including in Sabah. We see the potential of the gas industry in Sabah to champion socio-economic progress, similar to that in Peninsular Malaysia when gas consumption rose in tandem with the rapid growth of GDP.MGA has been playing an important role in advocating gas since its establishment in 1986 and is highly regarded as the bridge between policymakers and the industry; a role which we look forward to enhancing in Sabah.” Abdul Aziz Othman, President of MGA added.
MGA plays a prominent role in promoting engagement, discourse and dialogue with key stakeholders to develop a vibrant and sustainable gas industry, to fuel Malaysia’s socio-economic growth. It has been deeply involved in several national-level committees including those for the National Energy Policy 2022-2040 and the upcoming roadmaps for hydrogen and natural gas.
