MGA’s Energy Efficiency Program for school students
02 March 2015
Realizing the importance of energy conservation and inculcating good habits of using energy efficiently among youngsters, MGA embarks on an initiative called Energy Efficiency Program (EEP) for secondary school students. This program comes under the purview of MGA’s Learning and Development Working Committee.
The EEP aims to educate students on the importance of energy conservation and using energy efficiently.
The program is supported by the Energy Commission and the Ministry of Education.
MGA appointed PETROSAINS Sdn. Bhd. to implement the program due to their experience in conducting various educational programs for students. The program consists of Visit to School (VTS) which is designed to be interactive and hands-on. The duration of each VTS session is approximately 3 hours. During the VTS, PETROSAINS communicators would visit schools and conduct science demonstration, workshop, presentation on energy resources and electricity supply system in Malaysia and discussed with the students what are the good and bad habits in using energy.
In 2014, EEP VTSs were conducted at 30 secondary schools in Kuala Lumpur/Selangor, Johor and Pahang and involved 1,911 students.
Detailed analysis was carried out to measure the effectiveness of the program so far. The results were as follows:
• SPI # 1 (Service Performance Indicator) : 85.2% – level of effectiveness of PETROSAINS in stimulating learning of science especially in the science and technology of energy
• Average awareness : 88.5% – Level of effectiveness of EEP in increasing awareness of the importance in using energy efficiently at home and in school.
The EEP VTS will continue in 2015 in schools in Selangor, Kedah and Sabah.
In addition to the VTS, Energy Efficiency Science Fair (EESF) will also be conducted in Kuala Lumpur and Kota Kinabalu. EESF is a 1-day program which will include energy talk, science demonstration, interactive workshop, career test, meet energy industry professional session and an energy game.
The EEP program is currently funded by funds arising from the IGU (International Gas Union) Special Project under the Malaysian Presidency of IGU. MGA hopes to continue with this program and is willing to work with MGA member organizations that are willing to sponsor this program as part of the company’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative.
We also welcome the attendance and participation of representatives from MGA member organizations in this program.
