26 April 2022

GDC Putrajaya Plant

On 26th April 2022, MGA organised a site visit to a Cogeneration Plan located in the Gas District Cooling (GDC) Putrajaya Plant for Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC). MDEC is responsible to facilitate investment on data centers and keen to learn how cogeneration can provide reliable and efficient source of cooling and energy.

The one-hour site visit led by Dr. Lim Daw Yuen, the leader of MGA Task-Force on Promoting Cogeneration was aimed to enhance knowledge and exposure to cogeneration  system and application.

The plant is owned and operated by Gas District Cooling Sdn Bhd, Malaysia’s largest district cooling provider serving Putrajaya, Kuala Lumpur City Centre (KLCC) and Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA).

Delegation from MDEC was briefed on the importance of district cooling in acting as a central source to supply cooling to several buildings instead of multiple individual systems, hence increasing  energy efficiency.

Key highlights:

  1. Gas District Cooling Sdn. Bhd. operates eight district cooling plants using Cogeneration system with total combined capacity of 59 MW electric, 442 ton/hr steam, 147,000 RT & 238,000 RTh chilled water.

  2. District cooling is the most convenient method for the production and distribution of cooling for commercial purposes, also providing both economic and environmental benefits.
