Time : 11.30am – 12:30 pm

Speaker: Dr Renato Lima de Oliveira, Assistant Professor of Management at ASB

Topic:  Making Sense of Key Factors Affecting the Energy Market (OPEC+, Covid-19 and Energy Transition)

ASB is a collaboration between Bank Negara and MIT Sloan School of Management

Synopsis :
The price of the oil has just dropped by almost 50% after Saudi Arabia decided to break negotiations with OPEC+ members and increase its production. This sudden supply growth sent shockwaves to the global markets, already hit by a demand shock from the economic slowdown due to the Covid-19.
In this webinar, Prof. Renato Lima-de-Oliveira will address the short- and long-term challenges that the O&G sector and oil-rich countries are facing in light of coordination problems within OPEC, the growth of non-OPEC oil production (such as shale from the US,  deep offshore from Brazil and production from other markets) and the accelerating energy transition away from fossil fuels. Drawing from economics, politics, and history, he will address the causes of the recent changes and the different scenarios of how market dynamics will evolve and the effects to countries like Malaysia.
