REPORT: TECHNICAL VISIT TO TNB’s TUANKU JA’AFAR POWER STATION (GAS-FIRED) & JIMAH ENERGY VENTURES’ POWER STATION (COAL-FIRED), 12 JUNE 2014

A technical visit to TNB’s Tuanku Ja’afar Power Station and Jimah Energy Ventures’ Power Station in Port Dickson, Negeri Sembilan was successfully organized by MGA for its members on 12 June 2014.
A total of 49 participants from 21 MGA member organizations participated in this visit.
The objective of the technical visit was to provide MGA members with exposure and insight into the operation of gas-fired and coal-fired power stations, since natural gas and coal account to more than 90% of the electricity generated in Peninsular Malaysia.
MGA delegation arrived at the Tuanku Ja’afar Power Station (TJPS) at 9.45 am. The delegation which was led by council member, YBhg Dato’ Syed Faisal Albar, was warmly welcomed by the General Manager of the power station, Ir Roslan Abdul Rahman.
After a briefing on the history and background of the power station by the senior engineer, the participants were taken on a tour of the power plant. The TJPS which consists of PD 1 and PD 2 power plants, has a capacity to generate 1,500 MW of electricity. This gas-fired combined-cycle power station is one of the most efficient power plants in the Malaysia with thermal efficiency of 55.9%.
TJPS also hosted morning tea and lunch for the MGA delegation at their cafeteria. YBhg Dato’ Syed Faisal Albar presented a token of appreciation from MGA to TJPS.
The visit continued in the afternoon to the Jimah Energy Ventures (JEV) Power Station, located at Mukim Jimah, Port Dickson, Negeri Sembilan.
Upon arrival, the participants were briefed by Mr Ng Seong Wai, the power station’s assistant manager and were shown videos on the development of the project and the efforts by the power station to ensure that the project development and operation is environmentally friendly.
This coal-fired power station, which is situated in a reclaimed mangrove swamp, has two generating units with net capacity of 700 MW each. Aside from the boilers and steam turbines, the power station project also includes ancillary infrastructure such as a coal handling system, coal yard, ash pond and dedicated coal jetty.
After the briefing, the delegation was taken on a tour of the plant by bus, with a brief stop at the coal jetty.
In addition to hosting hi-tea, JEV also gave small token to all participants. En. Ahmad Hashimi Abdul Manap, alternate council member to YBhg Dato’ Syed Faisal Albar, presented a token of appreciation from MGA to JEV.
Feedbacks from the participants were very positive and more of such trips were requested to be organized.
